You get what you pay for!! Grab a DeVilbiss GTI 2000. Ya its around $400 but I use mine every day (being a painter) along with my SATAs. It should come with a 1.5 tip for your sealer and base and a nice 1.3 for the clear!

but, if you were only going to paint 1 car, would you splash out the $400+ for a sata, then have it collect dust on a shelf?

i was advising him on painting 1 or maybe 2 cars only, not making a career out of it. if that were the case i would have given totally different advise

I see your point. I'm just going to say I have owned a few $40-200 guns in my life and you can expect to be sanding out lot of runs and orange peel after the job. I can predict that if you paint you car, later on you will repaint the bumper, hood and fenders after some rock chip build up. Plus don't forget patching up rust holes or fixing dents and dings that appear in the future. I'm not saying go buy a $700 SATA but a nice $400 DeVillbiss is a wise investment the will yield great results and should last you the rest of you life. Just my 2 cents.:p

Yah, once I find a good place to start doing prep work and shooting it might be my permanent place to do it. So if I were to keep doing it I would probably buy a more expensive gun. I'm going to try knocking out all my body work at one time, and maybe I will have to paint a new front bumper for my daily. Good point Trumpet, I like how you think lol, but like I said, for now I will play around with a cheap gun, then once I get better move up to a more advance gun.
I got a fender roller now! LMK if you need me to roll your fenders or want to rent the tool from me locally.

Damn, man, you sound like me advising wanna-be installers!

So neither of you guys made any $120 suggestions?

How much are new tips for those HF guns, or are they available?

I have 2 or the HVLP HF guns, useless crap, might as well use a spray can.

it comes from being older and wiser.
                they never listen anyways though.

and the HF guns can kick out at least 5 paint jobs before you throw them away and spend another $30 on a new one

HEY! I paint for a living wtf...oh wait, ya point made (mutters to self)
Once you do it for a living it is no longer fun. Lotsa lotsa money in it thou imo or i sure as shit wouldn't be doing it!

My dad painted his 51 Ford with a pump fertilizer sprayer in 1958. He still uses lacquer spray paint (from a can), to paint his Morgan. Dayton wire wheels took this picture at the Arthritis Foundation Auto Show about 3 years ago and put it on their web site. http://www.daytonwirewheels.com/gall...ishcar006.html

I used to paint for a living, stopped being fun so I stopped doing it.

You can also look into a Transtar cheapo gun, or a Garco made by Sharpe, those are better than Harbor taiwan shit, I think those two range anywhere between $150 and $200.

1.3 tip for clear and basecoat.
1.5 -1.8 for primer, depending on what you are using.
I didn't read every post here but if it has been mentioned before, sorry.

my supplu house has this chinna chang chang setup, 3 guns in a shrinkwrap box, primer, base/clear and a jamb gun for under $100. You could start with that, buying a $400 gun for a a novice painter is kinda overkill if youre doing just your car. best part is if you eff em up, you just chuck em and start over.

and whoever said plastic gun cups will dissolve in thiner is a retard.

This may sound like a dumb question, but I was thinking about re-painting my front and rear bumpers bcause they are starting to fade and I was wondering if I would need a paint gun just for that? Or is there some other way to paint those?

                          i said that.
i was stating that if they use a cheap non chemical proof plasic they COULD melt. it was worth the little bit more $$ to get the aluminum cups to upgrade.

if it is a nonmetalic, you could get away with having an automotive paint supply store make up a few rattle cans of base and clear so you could do a small job.

i did that for some of the parts on my jetta. it isn't cheap though. it was around $30 to $40 a can

You sound just like a guy I used to work with, except he used to sing it in tune as "momma don't let your son grow up to be a painter". He though sucked at painting. There are days I hate my job but for the most part I love it. Been doing it for 8 years and im able to pay the bills, feed my family and be able to do things I like doing.

Back on topic, I use a SATA RP 1.3 for everything. I did however pay $500 for it. What I like about it is as long as you keep it clean it will spray well everytime. Unlike the Iwata guns the packing nut for the needle on them always gets gunked up and the needle sticks then paint just flows out of the gun like a water hose. Devilbiss has a gun called the StarterLine. You can pick one of those up for about $100 and it works well.

                                i am very good!
but the way the industry is going the body guy is getting fucked out of his money very slowly as the insurance companies tighten things down and pay less and less for the same quality work.

i just don't see the future in it like it used to be.
pretty much the whole automotive field is heading down hill compared to what it used to be.

i wish it wasn't, because i really enjoy doing it.
