    splitters funcionable, or fashionable?

Hey, I see Splitters all the time, and wonder If there sole purpose is to prevent damage to the lip.

I tried searching to find out what their purpose really is.

What is the purpose of splitters, besides looks?

they kinda protect the lip.. unless of course you pull it off because of the splitter.

In theory its for downforce as i recall

I think of it as a skid plate for the lip.

A well designed splitter could have a small aerodynamic effect I suppose. But not at any kind of sane speed.

i got mine to protect the paint on my valence, ends up first time i hit something it cracked the splitter and flexed the valence enough to crack the paint anyway so...

they don't if it's made of flimsy 1/8" plastic and only extend 1" past the lip on either side like most of the ones people use.

Actually, i recall an episode of topgear where they had an e36 in some track event and they lost the splitter and their lap times were significantly increased.
