    how much does it really stiffen up the chassis though? surely the sunroof panel helps with some of the deflection?

    increased rigidity (no hole in roof), increased headroom (useful for taller folks or if you are going to put a cage in), reduced weight up high from cg.

    mostly makes no difference on a street car but on a race car, yes.

    my 87 325es might as well be a slick top.....

    cause the sunroof motor is dead.

    Like Mr 325 said, the only US spec cars that didn't have sunroofs were 318is models, and relatively few of those as well.

    On the other hand, in the rest of the world non-sunroof e30s seem to be much, much more common.

    If you really really wanted a slicktop the non-sunroof roof panel is still available direct from BMW. Cut, weld, paint, slicktop.
