Vented Hood

So I'm needing to vent my hood soon to create a little more room under the hood! But I just wanted to see how everyone else has gone about this so I dont screw anything up! So whats the simplest way to raise the hood?

Also has anyone every raised a motor(M42)? I wanna get a little more clearance under the car from the oil pan! If I raise it with just some risers under the motor mounts will I run into any major problems?

If you shim it up, your driveshaft is no longer straight and aligned. I know it had a joint that allows movement, but I'm not sure how far you can go without rendering harm... not far, I suspect. Get a skid plate.

yeah i dont think ill need to raise it much...just like 1/2"...i dont think thatd screw anything up majorly or really effect anything! and im still gonna run a skid plate...but i want more clearance to go that much lower!

you can adjust your hood latches so the hood sits higher. Loosen the latches closest to the firewall and raise them up. this will give you about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of hood to engine clearance.

It also allows more air to escape and pass over the windshield when driving which helps with cooling.

The hood won't sit "flush" with the fenders anymore. It will be raised in the back(side closest to firewall)

I placed a spacer under the catches on my old car. Although I'm not sure how much it helped cool the engine, as if you think about it the base of the wind screen is a very high pressure zone. I think it would only help if there was a front under tray, and even then I'm still not sure how effective it is.

I must add that when I was at a stand still I could see heat coming out of the newly created gap at the rear of the hood.

its sort of pointless to do this. How low does your car sit on the ground right now? most m42 guys get a skid plate and dont have any issues however I dont have a skid plate and Im on coilovers. Drive carefully and you wont have problems.

Right now I'm sitting on cut springs so im really not that low but once I get coils...its gonna get dumped! And I'm wantin to go a lot lower than the average e30! I mean I want the car no higher than 1.5" from the ground! And thats the highest!
So I'm doin all I can to be able to get where I want!

Remove the rubber trim pc that seals the rear of the hood, the one sits just under the wiper arms on the pinch. I did it on my DSM to cool things off under the hood a bit.

I got some IE motor mounts and stacked some washers under there too. No more breakie oil pan. Don't know if there was hood clearance issues, because my hood was already raised in the rear with spacers.
