My car has a whole crapload of dents and dings all over it (wouldn't be able to tell from pictures). I am going to have every dent removed (2 new doors put on). I am also going to have the entire car body sand blasted (yeah, I said sand blasted) after I take the car apart down to the bare body. I will be taking the car apart in the guys shop and he is going to put epoxy on the body (as a rust inhibitor) and respray the entire thing. This is going to cost me $2500.

I've seen the work and know the quality. It is showroom quality work.

    My suggestion:
Ask around with people in the muscle car group. Those people have their cars painted all the time and one of them in the group will know of someone who does paint work dirt cheap. $2500 may not exactly be dirt cheap, but for all the work that has to be done to repaint the car, its well worth it.

Ok, maybe not quite $10k, but closer to around 6-7. Ask Jordan about that one. Any paint/body shop that KNOWS what they are doing isn't going to charge only $3000.

I would want my paint to look concours quality.
I have a close friend of the family who owns his own body shop. They do excellent work... and give a LIFETIME garantee on everythign including paintjobs. For example.... a year back i did 12 grand worth of damage on the car i had at that time. I hydroplaned on the highway and slammed the car into the barier screwing up the whole right side of the car. I had him do the work to fix it. Later i took the car to a dealership to had it appraised and they couldn't even tell it was in an accident. Sorry for all that i just wanted to illustrate that the guy is good. Anyway, i talked to him about a good paintjob... and he sad that he charges $3500 for the whole thing, that includes everything including the engine bay. So unless you are making some sort of crazy custom color, you should never pay 6-7 grand. Never. I on the other hand am paying a grand for the paint, and hes spraying it for me for free.

How about some info on a respary? I want to buy another e30 in the future and make it a project car. Say if i buy a black e30 with an ok paint job how much would it be to have it resprayed black. Does that cost the same as painting a different color? Does anyone know any good shops in WA? Thxs

My car needs some paint soon, one thing that concerns me is the paint around the windshield and rear window. With fresh paint taken up to the rubber moldings but not underneath, wouldn't it peel away easily?

jeeze people, it's not that hard.

if you're a tightwad like myself, do it yourself!!!!!!! think about it: some of the country's dumbest people can paint a hell of a car- why not you? take your time and prep everything BETTER than a bodyshop would- they want to make money. if you do it yourself, you have a personal connection and reason for doing things slowly and thoroughly. paint it in your garage like i did: $30 garage sale paint gun, my old crappy compressor with a moisture remover, and a lot of plastic sheating on the walls. rig up a box fan sucking through a filter to blow air into your garage from a window and let the air flow out the other side through an open window or door with a screen. get a lot of light. wet the floor down. make pals with a bodyman down the street and give him a beer to give you a few mixing/ gun tuning pointers and watch you spray it some saturday this spring when the pollen isn't outrageous. you'll end up with a few runs and some orange peel in places, but you can color sand most of it out. even if it's not perfect, you'll be happy you saved so much money and proud you did it yourself.

visit my website: http://www.geocities.com/uscbigdaddykane/cars.html to see the orange VW karmann ghia i painted in 9th grade (ok, i had some help with that one) for $80 in single stage paint, or the green one i did 2 years later (2-stage $120 paint). naturally, i spent a lot of money in prep and bodywork stuff (and a horrendous ammt of time, but that included the entire restoration), but with most bmw's in at least decent condition, the prep time and $ will be minimized. i practiced on the family's 86 taurus wagon, and painted it with $100 single stage metallic in one weekend over spring break a few years ago bc it didnt have much bodywork to do. that paint held up GREAT on that beater, although it was really orange-peely due to the difficulty in getting the metalflake to look right with single stage. just don't make the mistake of using waterbased sealer- that was a disaster on the green ghia.

good luck and don't be a p%ssy- just go do it!

I know, that is how I was thinking about 1yr ago. I am not sure, I would need a compressor and gun, and find the paint. But actually I may have found a new car, I hope. I just need some $$$.

But first I need to get my car back into shape!

with that what they do is run thick yarn under the seals so it lifts so they can sand and paiht under the seal.

on the car i painted only - no major parts replaced- i did it for under $200 including paint, sealer, all the prep supplies, and making a booth in the garage. of course i already had the gun, compressor, and garage to do it in.
