    Removal of under-hood foam insulation

What do you guys think would be the best way to remove my nasty foam under-hood insulation? Mine has taken 20 years of abuse and the shit is nasty. It turns to dust when you touch it. I was thinking about laying a sheet of the engine bay and scraping most of it off and then using some PB Blaster or something to remove the adhesive crap. I'll probably get the newer style one later on.

on my 85 318i I just scrapped it off then, got rid of the remaining residue. It was so crumbly it came off quit easy.

How'd you get rid of the residue? I'd like to find an easier way than a full can of goof-off and a million dead brain cells.

Did you get the non-foam one? The one that's on the newer e30s. Where did you get yours?

It's really to protect the paint? I thought it was for sound insulation.

Anybody know where to get a new one? I want the newer style one if possible.

From my understanding i thought it was a sort of heat sheild. the one on my car is very thin and wouldn't be useful as a sound insulator. Your thick foam one might act as one though. I think all mine is for is to protect the hood from excessive heat.

The newer style ones are still kinda crummy. There like a sheet of abrasive type weave material, hard to explain. I wouldt get it if I was you. bavauto makes a slick one that goes inbetween the support members type things on the hood. Kinda like lukas' trunk mat things. I hope that helped. Just go look over at bavauto.

                      I bombed Korea every night.

318is has 3 foam panels. I would have preferred the other type but I had already ordered from dealer, I think it was $30.

Which cars came with the newer one? The one on bavauto looks just like my old foam one. My foam turned really nasty. Does anybody have a picture of the newer style ones?

the foam is for sound insulation. In germany you have to have the foam to run a open air filter legally.(i dont really understand that as my exhaust is alot louder), or they also have a full piece made out of like a carpet cardboard thing.
