Fiberglass hoods - what the low down? cheaper?

At some point I want to get a lighter hood - Is there a less expensive fiberglass hood avaiable? Or is the VIS(?) the best fitting/cost hood out there?

I think the VIS CF hood is the best bet. Its light, and it fits as well as you can expect a aftermarket CF hood to fit.

I will say that the VIS hood isn't perfect but it's damn close and the finish is nice. My friend has a Ireland Engineering FG hood and it's got all kinds of flaws on it, ripples, waves and looks like shit from up close. For the money, the VIS hood is hard to beat.

wow! that bad hun? - Well Cf it is then

(can I just say that CF for a hood is stupid....the part would be perfectly fine just made of fiber glass)

don't expect too much of the VIS hood though. composite hoods are hard enough to fit as is... and cf overlay just makes it that much harder...

if you're a perfectionist, you'll find all sorts of flaws.

However, generally speaking, the finish is a 9.5/10 and the fit is a 8.5/10

there's no rubbing anywhere, it's just that it doesn't line up perfectly in a few areas near the rear of the hood.

overall I'd still reccommend it since the weight savings are awsome and the price can't be beat.

and cf overlay is just for the "cool" factor... I'd rather have a plain fg hood and prep/paint it myself... but that options wasn't avaliable, so cf overlay it is...

              Right.

It's not a necessary trait of a race hood. They really just need to represent the silhouette of the car - y'know, like Nascar an' shit.

Slap the fucker on, paint it up, couple sponsor stickers here 'n' there, pin it down, and haul ass --- that's what they do.

Just think about what you're buying --- if you buy a full-on race FG hood with little to no bracing from Ireland Engineering, a race-focused shop, then you're gonna get a hood that covers the engine bay, looks like an E30 hood, and that's about it -- oh, and it's really damn light.

              So what d'you really want?

Make it out of thinner Aluminium and bond it to the steel skin. You should end up with a lighter unit overall. CF in a multi layer unit with be heavy from the amount of resin needed for the matt work. Unless they use a prepreg, and even that weighs a good bit. I have worked with Kevlar and Armid and CF plus cheap FG and depends on how much strength you need.

You could go with a lighter material and get away with looking so so.
