Actually, it's a sunglasses holder by definition.

will any of your suggestions allow light to pass through as it does before "painting"?

Light doesn't pass through the needles. The E30 gauges are lit from the front.

Wha? I replaced all the bulbs in my gauge cluster not 2 months ago and I would have sworn under oath that they were all behind the gauges. Maybe the light reflects back onto the needles somehow, whereby they appear to be backlit, but they are not lit from in front.?

The push throught into some amber covers. The light shines from the front.

I thought the majority were from the front while there were still a few that back lit the gauges? Feel free to correct me.

Not to perpetuate the argument here, but I replaced like 13-14 bulbs in my cluster and they ALL pushed in from the backside of the cluster. I am not sure how they light the face of the gauges from the front. Someone help ME here.

The painted needles look the same as unpainted ones at night.

I've had red needles in the past, no trouble with visability whatsoever. I used red nail polish.

I'll try to dig up some night pics.
