Sanding and painting an iS lip

    Hey guys,

I just got my hands on an iS lip for cheap.... planning on throwing it in there, but it's red and I want to paint it black ( flat black ). I was just wondering how I'd go about this seeing I'm a complete n00b at painting. Right now the most important question is how I would go about sanding this? What grit would be good to sand it down?

After that I guess it's just get a can of SEM trim paint and spray a coat or two there....

Anyone with some info help me out here,

    Thanks,
    Erick

If you want to paint it schwarz, pick up a rattle-can filled with your paint, as well as some primer and clearcoat from www.paintscratch.com

As far as sanding it, probaby 200 grit to start with, then 400 and 800. the primer should fill in the rest, then sand over the primer with 1000, then paint and clearcoat.

Sort-of, if used properly it will turn rust into a paintable surface.

        It won't magically de-oxidize iron.

One more thing I forgot to add, make sure to order your paint/primer with a flex agent.

Heh, yeah, didnt expect it to have any magic effects. Though it did remind me of a time when someone on a car forum was advertizing a spray that supposedly containted Krypton and Radon which was supposed to 'react' with the Iron oxide and turn it into normal Iron again. Which is funny because Noble gases tend not to like reacting with things.

I wouldnt want to paint it metallic... I want it flat black.... like SEM Trim paint. The idea is to paint the lip w/ that can as well as the bumper trim which is horribly faded.

I havent researched at all, but would you mind explaining me exatcly what is a flex agent? Is the primer still required if I'm going with SEM trim paint?

                Thanks,

What prep work would a brand new lip require? Or do I just need to paint and clear it?

SEM trim isn't FLAT black. it's a semi-gloss. flat-black would look like primer, and would not match the trim on your car at all.

if you primer, use black. new IS lips come painted primer gray, which sucks if you want to paint it a dark color. I wish they would have just left it plastic colored!

I probably didnt express myself correctly, I just want it to look like my bumper trim does. Not some metallic/shiny paint like the rest of the car. Sorry I'm horrible when it comes to paint terms or w/e :P

400 grit it up, then sem, several light coats as it says. mine looks like brand new plastic after that.

my brand new one came all ready to go. All i did was spray with some SEM Flat black. If I was going to paint it red i would do a clearcoat over it.

I know this isn't about the IS Lip specifically - however, I have a few more painting related questions:

How bout that rear spoiler? If I wanted that body color, would I buy the correct primer, paint, and clearcoat with flex agent from paintscratch?

If I didn't want it body color, I'd just get normal primer? (or, primer with a flex agent at Paintscratch?) And, the SEM Trim paint?

Would these methods work for both the front lower and rear trunk IS Lips?

Additionally, I had a question on the actual late E30 front spoiler - mine has a few pits in it, and the paint it a tad dull. How would I go about repainting that? Would I just get the correct paint, primer and clearcoat?

How would I get rid of the textured look too? I'd love to make the front spoiler smooth. ;)

I know its kind of off-topic, but I still feel its related to the thread as a whole. The whole reason I ask this is becuase I am debating on whether or not to paint the rear spoiler body color, or black. And, at the same time, trying to decide if I should paint my future IS front lip body color, or trim black. If I did it body color, I'd probably paint the rocker panels body color as well - how simple would that be? (I'd probably need to mask off every other part of the car, wouldn't I?

                            Thanks! :D

the is lip is flat so when you paint it, it'll come out shiny. If the valence above the is spoiler is really chipped, I would paint that at the same time so the front will match.

theeurodepot sells spray paint at $20 shipped. Pretty good color match too. One can is good for the is spoiler and rear spoiler.

You always need primer on before you paint. I don't think the rear is spoiler needs a flex agent b/c its pretty hard already.
