What's the difference between the overhead check control and tell tale?

My '92 318 has the "tell tale" in it... It's broken, so I was looking at replacing it, and noticed there appears to be another versions, called "check control" in the parts database. The connections appear to be identical. Are they interchangeable?

The check control is for M20 cars. The tell-tale is for M10 and M42 cars. They can physically interchange in terms of mounting (i.e. a tell-tale can be mounted into a car that came with check control, and vice versa), but they’re electronically incompatible (i.e. the connector for a tell tale will not connect to a check control panel and vice versa)

OK, thanks! So 318 gets tell tale and 325 got the check control.

My 318 has a tell tale thats broken. What information should it be telling me if it were functional? Thanks!

has up to four warning function / lights. thought they were all related to restraint systems, only two i've ever seen lit were airbag and seatbelt malfunction.
see it has an srs light and engine overheat as well. the srs is also an airbag system warning and the overheat is self-explanatory. "working" would appear blank unless there is an issue.

edit : you can trace the fucntion and what sets them off in an etm : Index of /Manuals/BMW (wedophones.com) download the appropriate one now while they are still available.
