Yep.
So I just parted ways with Dan (M42Technik) after two days of hell.
Dan and his friend Clarence drove 8.5 hours starting at 4 AM Friday to come up and swap out his tan sport interior for a full houndstooth interior.
Full, including carpet, and custom suede headliner from RobS.
I had worked the night before (11p-7a), so I wasn't expecting them until 2 or 3...apparently they made good time :) I met them at my garage around 2:30. At that point we shuffled my 62 friggin E30's and other various cars to get Dan's in one of the bays. The first thing I did was pull the burgundrot car out to make room. In the process, the flourescent light I had hung in the ceiling came crashing down. Sweet. Should have tipped us off that we were in for a fun filled couple of days.
Started tearing into his car, door panels got swapped first, as they were easy and didn't rely on anything else. Then we started stripping his car. Front seats, back seats, rear panels. Since he was doing his headliner, glass came out too. He had fixed glass, so that was a pain in the ass to get out.
Get to about 5 o clock, realize that Bav closes at 5:30. Need b pillars (those broke on the way out, surprise surprise) and the lockstrip clips. Get halfway there, ton of Mem day traffic. Call them beg them to stay open until 535 - they do. We get half of the lockstrips (all they had) and no b pillars.
Get back, one of the 6 torx bolts holding the sunroof gets stripped. So we leave it in and work around the panel (my drill is OOS). Get the rest of the headliner out, start getting the suede one ready. Get it up, realize it's too big/too heavy - fitment needs adjusting. RobS says he can work on it sunday, but Dan needs to leave sat night. No go there.
On to the carpet. By this point we were all fading fast, and just frustrated with all of it. Dan gets the parts car carpet cut out with fairly minimal effort - doesnt even need to disconnect the accel pedal as it's rusted right out of the damn floor. Cuts around the console to easy removal/installation. Padding stays in the parts car (destroyed anyways.)
We call it a night after cutting halfway around the tan existing carpet. Drop them off at the hotel, head to bed.
Started again at 3 PM. Tan carpet comes out, we get the grey in. Goes in with little incident. Dan decides to go fuh raze and leave the headliner out - project for back in Maryland. We also had to reuse his rear tan deck, as I had no available grey ones.
Glass kicks our asses on the way back in. Fingers are bleeding and raw from working the gasket around the edges. Realize that lockstrip is NOT going in without the bav tool - and theyre closed. No lockstrips for the ride home. Side windows go in with some coaxing, but the shadowline trim won't stuff in. Another project for back home. Dan takes his frustration out on the rear panels....leaving two broken clips that I dig out :) I put the rear panels on this time ;) (poor dan).
Rear seat goes in effortlessly. Sunroof tracks arent lining up, and *snap* off goes one of the mounts. One side gets torx'ed in, the rest of the roof gets taped down. Project # 3 for home....
Front seats finally go in, and we call it a day. 10PM we "finish."
The car looks amazing now, with a few minor issues to tend to, but way better than the tan stock interior. Having Dan be as OCD to detail as I am made it hard to cut corners, which was a good thing. Dan just called and let me know the car seems to be holding up - he's made it out of MA into CT, swearing he will never return to the state of MA ever again :)
And he reminds me that we forgot to pack his headliner on the car before he left. Unbelieveable.
