Also is there any wiring that needs to be done or is everything else plug/play?

    TIA.

Apparently there is a factory part that works. Do a search for the part number. I just went to home depot and bought several washers that got the job done. You also need to jam the spring loaded locking mechanism for the airbag with a toothpick or something otherwise it'll keep you from turning the wheel. Then unplug the connector at the orange airbag box underneath to disable the SRS light. It's all a pain in the ass but well worth it as that airbag wheel is just plain.

Truth. You can get it from any E30 with a steering wheel, part # is 32311120260, you only need one.

Just pull that pin out with pliers, or your fingers.

And that as well, you'll be done!

Ian, if I remove that pin will I be able to reinstall it if I were to go back to the airbag wheel? it's dangerous if it were to ever dislodge and pop back out while driving.

I will go yank it off my parts car to check to see if it's able to be reinstalled.

Okay, yeah. Easily reversible. It's just a little push-pin with a spring on it. You press it back into the hole you pulled it out of, and it works just like it used to. I checked it on my car to be sure.

pics showing the pin(and the spacer the OP will need, the car comes with the one in the picture on it, you need to stack an additional one after the steering wheel.):
