    Ferrari gate shifter?

Has anyone ever installed one of those DTM shifters with a Ferrari-style gate shifter plate?

    (‘cause that’d be sweet..)

You'd need to fix the engine and trans in place much more effectively to do that. I'd agree that it is a really dumb idea.

it would look cool, but in practice I'd think shifting would be much more difficult and slow

I was going to do it with an AKG DTM shifter and stock console. As in get rid of the leather boot and make a gate to go in its spot. At least for this shifter it doesn't move enough to make a discernible pattern.

often wondered about this. Would love to see someone try it. If done properly I doubt it would be slower than stock, I mean, Ferraris are almost as fast as an e30 right?

Why would anyone think that it shifts slower? When you shift, the lever does not rub on the gate, it isn't like you feel it...a nice tight shifter would be fine.

              I say DO IT!

I have always loved the way these look, its kinda like when you look in a car and see this you're like "WOW!! that car is fast!!" :)

BTW the audi TT and audi R8 also have these. Also older lambos and i'm sure other cars too.
I really like this idea and there have been threads about it in the past. If anything it would make shifting more intuitive and prevent misshifting. And it looks really cool. You would just have to measure where the gears are and then make the plate to those specs. You would have to get a DSSR to eliminate play in gear and slop.

ah - using a plate in the stock console was what I had in mind too. I guess if the AKG unit doesn't move right, then that's a deal-killer.

Does anyone know if those AKG shifters bang into the console like stock when going to reverse?

lol you have a worn shifter with lots of slop. They don't bank into the console.
                        well mine doesn't

hmm.. mine does, and I can assure you there is next to zero slop. Fully fresh rebuild with UUC shifter, DSSR, delrin bushings, new hardware, etc.. I thought banging into the console upon reverse was common..

Mine has never hit the console.

24V swap and a straight shifter/lever will bang the console, generally.
