Sport Seat adjustment

What is the front lever on the sport seat supposed to do I just got new seats and I am trying to dial them in like the old ones but on none of the 4 seats I have does this lever seem to do anything

it makes the seat go up and down in height. if your sitting in it, it won't go down or up. so push up or down and the seat should go up in height or drop down.
i was wondering why my friends e30 sport seat was lower then mine, so istarted messing with it (not sitting in the seat) and it moved down. i was like cool.

^Many times if it does not, most likely the shocks are shot, needing replacement.

I thought the front lever was tilt.

The lever at the corner does tilt, the one in front of that is for height adjustment.
