its a contact ring on the inside of the steering wheel. remove the steeringwheel and look at the back of it, its a gold looking ring, it makes contact with a carbon pin that's attached to the steering column

sometimes the carbon pin will break off, if your horn isn't working its probably broken so youll have to order a new one, not hard to replace but you DO have to drill out 2 rivets.

the carbon pin is right beneath the bolt that holds the steering wheel in place, the rivets are the two holes on the side of it

to test it take the connector that attaches to the contact ring and touch it to the steering column, car needs to be on.

This helped. My friend and I drilled the rivets out successfully today and installed the new part. The replacement part is called "carbon pin" at online BMW part sites, part number 32331350750. Also online BMW part sites show a screw, nut and lockwasher to install the "carbon pin." These replace the rivets. See http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...54#32331350750

The screws are fillister design, M5 x 20, phillips head. Part numbers are as follows.
                      Fillister head screw 07119906853
                      Hex nut 07119922038

I bought m5x20 screws, nuts and lockwashers at my local True Value. They were a perfect fit for fastening the replacement carbon pin.
