    MTech II horn issue

I've searched and read some threads regarding people's problems with the horn when installing the MTech II steering wheel, but haven't found a match to the same problem that I'm having.

I installed the steering wheel and it doesn't honk unless I press down on the entire steering wheel.

There's a tiny gap after installing the steering wheel between the column and the wheel. When I press the wheel towards that gap, the horn goes off. It doesn't matter whether I have the horn pad connnected or not, the only way that it honks is if I press the entire wheel down.

Tried hooking up my old steering wheel (91' E30 318is) and it works fine with the horn pad.

Order of putting the mtech steering wheel on is BMW spacer-steering wheel-BMW spacer-washer-nut.

How do I get it to where it's just the horn pad that activates the horn?

Try, steering wheel-spacers-nut. I didn't put anything between the column and the wheel.

I tried it without the spacer between the wheel and column, but it ended up cracking the plastic shroud around the brass tab at the 6 o'clock position when I turned the steering wheel. It didn't completely shred the shroud though, but had to wrap it in electric tape to keep the brass tab aligned.

It's probably something simple that you are missing because the swap is pretty straightforward. Did you remove the white plastic peg from the column? The brass tab you are talking about I assume is the horn contact. It must make contact with the ring in the wheel for your horn button to work. Take a picture of the wheel and column.

^^^ this... I've installed mine, it's pretty self explanatory, just extra spacer.

Yep, me too. Pulled the white pin. Put a spacer on each side of the wheel, added washer and nut and was good to go. I have a 90 with an airbag wheel stock.

Yep, I pulled out the white tab at the 11 o'clock position as per one of the write ups.

I tried it without the spacer between the column and the steering wheel. Even with the nut tightened down all of the way, the steering wheel still had some play between the column and wheel. As soon as I turned the key, the horn kept going off. This is somewhat weird as the first time I installed it without the spacer in this location (when I cracked the horn tab white plastic shroud), the horn wasn't going off.

Here is the original setup as I've read some other people on the write ups using: From column to horn pad - BMW spacer (already there with my four spoke wheel), steering wheel, BMW spacer, washer.

Also of note, I've tried additional washers after the spacer and it still doesn't affect anything.

I should have specified...let's see the steering wheel.

You are missing the plastic horn contact ring! The screws are there but the ring is gone. Good news is you can use one off any non airbag wheel.

Doh! Thanks reelizmpro, I really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through it and find the issue. I'll be finding that contact ring to put in and get it working properly.
