Wood grain trim

So every time I see the pic of that french guy with the alpina and wood grain trim. I want some. Like bad... But its uber rare.. Could I pull out my carpentry skills and attempt? How do they get that finish? Thats not a normal grain finish that I've ever seen.

I have a "wood grain" trim kit that was manufactered by Racing Dynamics out of Alexandria, Va. It is E30 specific and is a gray wood color. I never knew Racing Dynamics was a Virginia based company, that's pretty cool to know.

As for e30 wood trim I had no idea any ever existed. I know that a lot of wood trim is just a wood veneer with a clear poly coating. If you could live with the look of wood without having the real thing that might be an option.

If you cut out wood veneers and then seal and apply a few coats of clear you could get the same result. The downside is the veneer sticks on top of the plastic piece.

To make it look more like a wood panel vs a stick on piece you could hydrographic a wood image onto the factory trim pieces.

I was thinking of making my own from scratch if i did. Id put in my own studs etc and use the plastic pieces as lay outs

That would be the right way to do it. Making matching wood inserts for your doors would be pimp!

Racing Dynamics is an Italian company. If I remember correctly there was some trademark dispute about 15 years ago when a US distributor registered Racing Dynamics name in the US and started producing copies.

So after some research its not a finish done to wood its a type of wood called burl very expensive and sought after. Now to find some haha. Burl wood is apprantley the knots on trees trunks that you see.
