Comfort Seat Coupe and Sedan Compatibility

    Hey Everyone!

I have an '89 325i coupe that has the tan comfort seats. The driver's seat needs is torn pretty bad right where you sit and needs to be replaced. I was able to find a pair of OEM front comfort seats for $400 that were in very good condition on CL except that the stitching in the vinyl on the seat portion of the drivers seat is starting to come undone. When I looked at them the next day after purchasing, I realized that I had made a mistake and purchased seats for a 4-door. They don't have the lever on the side to make them lean forward.

I'm going to try to take the passenger seat portion of the new set that I purchased and try to swap that with the drivers seat portion of my current pair. Has anyone done this before or know if it is something that you can do?

I've found a few guides on how to disassemble the seats for reupholstering so I'm going to follow those for disassembly. Any tips would be appreciated!

I've been told that disassembly/reassembly is almost the same as sport seats. I did my 'vert sport seats last fall and it was easy with the DIYs. Still need to do the comforts in my Touring.

I've also read that the cushions are the same L and R, and sedan vs coupe, so you should be able to just move the sedan cushions to your coupe frames.

Please post your results, in case the info I've posted is incorrect.

I'll be swapping the seats most likely this weekend. I had to wait to get my car back from being painted so I'll post my results when I'm done!

      Thanks for the tips.

I swapped out the seats and it was a success! I used the guide here to take it apart, these are sport seats but it's pretty much the same. I've never taken seats apart but this guide showed about 90% of what I needed to know and I was able to figure out the rest.

The one thing that isn't mentioned on here is if you look at step number 10, you will need a pair of snap ring pliers. You can see it behind that piece he is prying off.

So, the seat portions of the sedan and coupe for comfort seats are interchangeable. I took the hinge assembly from my seats and put them on the better seat so I wouldn't have to swap which side the handle was on and I didn't have spare plastic guides for the reclining cable that goes to the handle on the back of the seat.

Feel free to PM me if someone is looking to do the same and has any questions.
