    Fun at the junkyard... Homelink!

Homelink unit pulled from a wrecked 750i. A little shaving of the case on top and a carefully cut opening makes for a stock looking install. Only ground and power needed to be connected to my sunroof switch.

It is incredibly handy to have it up there. I no longer have a clunky remote rattling around my door pocket and the range is really good.

          On my new car.

Now that I know that I can do that with the e30 however....
          ....

Yes it opens garage doors and gates.

Yeah, one button for the garage door at each of your three houses.

Whoa so wait only the ground and power is needed and it's fully functional? No software or what not?

It's like a TV remote. It just transmits the signal.

To program it just take your old remote and hold the button on the car till the light blinks three times, then click the old remote....it learns the signal.

Some people have two-or-three car garages and you'd need a separate remote for each door. Some people have gates on their driveways.

                      ground and power

The homelink unit actually has three wires. One is power, ground and the third is for the lights. I just connected lights to +12v. They are nicely LED backlit. The unit is completely self-contained. It's one of those things I never knew I needed until I intalled it, like my Z-3 shifter, e-36 power window buttons or keyless entry. Now I don't think I could live without it.

I have a homelink on my IS300. three options. I use it for the two garages here, and for the security gate at my place in Florida.
