The RIT die idea is kind of interesting. You could spray it on, let it sit for a while and then vacuum it back up with a shop vac.

The bad thing about the RIT dye in my experience is that it doesn't/didn't hold up to water abuse and normal wear and tear. Infact when I was dying my bros (dibo718) tan carpet, the dye turned the carpet purple instead of black.

I have used duplicolor fabric and vinyl spray paint with great success thus far even on the door panels. You can buy this at some Walmarts and Advance Autopart stores.

      Here are some pictures:

Before (Look at how nasty the carpet was):

      After:

First Bleached it and shampooed it.

      First Coating of Paint.

Door Panels, these were Tan before. And yes the paint is durable, I tried making a scratch with my fingernail and it took quite a bit of force to scratch the paint.

      The paint used ~ $4 - $6 a can

        Ack!

That carpet hurt me deep inside, man. Like looking into a filthy trailor home. Or Congress.

has anyone ever tried rolling the carpet up and shoving it a trash can full of black dye putting the lid on and out in the sun for a day or two??
i think that would work the best! only draw back is, alot of dye.....

Thats method would not work as the carpet has a vert thich heavy foam as a backing and that shit would just soak up the dye solution like crazy .

So sem and dupli dye would be the best solution? Curious if theres different shade of black dye?

i have had fantasitc results with "Colorbond" products from http://www.bryndana.com/ And they come in BMW color codes!

I like it alot more than the SEM stuff. At least for leather and vinyl. The SEM products always leave a thick gritty feeling coating that can be scratched off with a fingernail. I have not been able to scratch off the colorbond and it does not change the feel. I dyed a red leather steering wheel black and it lasted 3 years before needing a touch up in my daily driver.

The vinyl dash and leather Porsche 911 seats for my caddy project were done in Mercedes "Java" tan and look and feel great a year later.

i have not tried the carpet dye yet. They claim it leaves a soft finish and based on my other experiences with their stuff I am inclined to beleive them.

I did some web searching. Found several sites suggesting "RIT" dye in a spray bottle of very hot water. Haven't tried anything yet.

I did mine with duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye. Its ok, but I think i'd recommend trying SEM's.

After a light brushing its plenty soft.
