    Argh!!!!

I may be uh, "challenged", as the politically correct say.

I was able to perform the dash swap, but for the life of me I can't get the front ashtray back in its receptacle!

    Please Help!

The lid has to be in the open position for it to drop in .

I tried that. before the swap I was able to pull the thing out to clean it and it would pop right back in... now I can't put it in again!

This is weird. I was just thinking about how, with all the things I DO know about these cars, I hardly ever know enough to give advice on the questions that come up these days. I was like, "it'd be funny if someone asked how to put the ashtray in, because I could totally answer that," no shit.

And then there's the actual question, and coming from someone who's just done a dash swap no less. And of course my answer is the same as Fred's.

The only other thing I can come up with is to make sure there aren't any stray wires or connectors from the cigarette lighter poking through to the ashtray hole and blocking it from sitting in there right. Sometimes they get stuck in the little slots I think. Other than that, it should really just go in with the lid up and facing the front of the car.

mine is a pain sometimes. aside from the answers above, make sure the lid isn't just in the open position, but that it's on the tray properly. the lid to mine can shift left to right and throws off the alignment quite a bit.

also, try putting it in slightly angled up (towards the front of the car). mine prefers to go in that way, and then click down.

I tried that, too. The wierd thing is that I didn't swap the front console, ashtray receptacle or ashtray - this is the same setup that I have always had and have always been able to take out and put back in...

Haha, I feel the same way - I hardly have any technical info to share. I'll check and make sure there isn't anything blocking it.

                Pusehd a little harder

I overcame all obstacles and installed the ashtray. How, you may ask was I able to win against time, the elements and the chaos around me?

                I pressed a little harder.

Thanks to everyone for the insight!
