    M3/ iX cluster swap

I did a search on this and from what I found, all i need to do is:

    1) Get an M3 cluster
    2) Swap the coding plug from mine into the M3 cluster
    3) Swap the tach face plate
    4) wire the oil temp sender
    5) match/roll the mileage to what I have

Is that all or am I missing something? Are there any write ups on this? Thanks.

If you swap in the coding plug, you don't need to change the gauge face. The whole point of swapping the coding plug is so it reads correctly.

OP is correct I believe. Since the M3 swept area goes an additional 1000 rpm, you would either need to send it off to a place like Hollywood Speedo or paste a 7K face on it, otherwise you would be ~15% off from indicated to actual.

I only know this much since I used my M3 cluster with my S52. You needed the 6 cyl coding plug & either solution posted, or else a modify tach signal with a small brainbox inline from the motor to cluster. I ran a brain box.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

sweet i was hoping I didnt have to change the face plate on the tach. But what about wiring the oil temp and rolling, up in my case, the odometer? Thanks.

To roll the odo up, either hook up a battery to the motor or pull the gears and turn it by hand.

here is a link I posted sometime back about these same basic questions http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=91577

The tach face swap is needed if you want it to read correct without having it custom calibrated for the m20.

There were also two different size gas tanks and the M3 has the smaller of the two from what I gathered. So that whole gauge and red needle has to be swapped if you have the larger tank, which I had.

I didn't bother turning the mileage to what mine read as it was only off less than 3000 miles and since my state considers the car exempt on mileage I didn't see the need in messing with it.

As far as the oil temp sender you can do what James recommends in the link above but I went the cheap/quick route out. I ordered 2 (since they are brass ) vdo oil temp 300 degree sending drain plug units from www.bmpdesign.com Double check your drain plug thread size, but it should be a 12x1.5mm, which is what you want to make sure to order(providing the one on a IX is the same) here is the link to the part needed from BMP Design http://www.bmpdesign.com/product-exe...earch_model/34 When I called them to double check the thread size for that part number it was correct just FYI.

I had the drain plug senders on order for 3 months through a different vendor when I found that BMP had them in stock

Hope this helps answer most questions anyways
