I'm bringing this thread back from the dead! I am going to remove my tan convertible carpet today. I already did a test spray with Duplicolor vinyl and carpet spray on the back piece. I was pleased with taking it from tan to black, but it is difficult to get the color down to the bottom of the nap. I have some VHT spray coming to see if that does something. I'll also brush it in better too.
Wish me luck!

I pulled my carpet today, sunroof leak and mold kind of ruined it. Really stinky. No rust (Whew!) but real funky stank going on.Pulling it is a real bitch, should be a lot of fun putting the new one in.
Bought an aftermarket to put back in, but I have to wait for the old one to finish drying before I can lay it on the new and outline the cuts. I paid $250 for the car, $300 for the carpet. Seems a bit backwards to me.
I will post results when done.

It figures. I got the carpet out (it literally fell apart pulling it, totally rotten) and the rain started. Now I have to hold off for a change in the weather. No garage (full of woodworking tools, saws, etc.) so it's in the carport.
Weather should be better by Sunday, I hope."I'd rather die happy than not die at all" Robbie Robertson, W.S. Walcott's Medicine Show.

whatever you do avoid removing the carpet from the car if you can!!
I just got done dealing with this and it was a fuckin bitch, my oem carpet was ruined. so i cut it out in multiple different pieces, in fact i still have half of it in the trunk in a trash bag haha.. So i found a replacement carpet from craigs list out of a sedan for 25 bucks.... i expected the worst.. Went to look at the carpet and the car it was in had broken windows and was sitting outside in the rain, so needless to say the carpet was soaked and had a couple of really crusty and gross rust spots embedded into it etc... so i tried to carefully remove this carpet from the donor car without cutting or ripping anything other than what i needed to around the heater core(it was dark when i took this carpet out of the car and had no flash light lol). finally got it out and into the back of my buddies truck.. brought it to a self serve car wash and pressure washed the living shit out of this carpet until i ran out of change.. i let the carpet dry for about 3 weeks before i even touched it again, bought some VHT charcoal grey carpet spray/dye then went to town. i regret not doing more coats but it still came out really well and looks 100% better than the original carpet looked i also took this time to rubber coat the interior floor while the carpet was out and it sure helped with sound reduction!. installing the carpet sucks only due to the shit loads of foam padding on the back side of the front of the carpet, getting it around the gas pedal sucked horribly and it still isn't sitting exactly where it should be, but i'm hoping it will work itself in sooner or later
Heres the carpet after it was done being installed. as you can see the interior isn't completely back together and yes the seat belt buckles are on the wrong sides!!
Yes you can dye carpet i used VHT and it worked pretty damn good, whoever said dye/paint wont stick to this carpet was a fuckin mental case!Last edited by NeedaE30; 05-01-2014, 05:57 AM.

I should point out that I attempted to dye the OE carpet from an El Camino using that exact same can of spray dye and it flaked off and turned to a gummy mess...lets leave the GMs and Fords to the "Pro's", where they have a chance of being correct.
5 cans of VHT brand "carpet dye" and a stiff but soft nylon brush. Yes, its a raging pain, but it looks and feels great, if not absolutely perfect, and it certainly doesn't "bleed".
VHT is owned by Duplicolor BTW, so if you can't find VHT, use the Duplicolor, its the exact same stuff.
Best of luck!
