Since I only have a 1/4 brain (the other 40% has been killed by beer :D), I have to ask. Couldn't I just switch the wires from low beam to high beam and vise versa? So that the high beam circuit is now connected to the low beam (and versa vice)? My highs (sealed beams 87 325E) are noticebly brighter (duh) than my lows. So when I turn on my headlights on low, the highbeams are actually lit? I don't won't to fry anything and I'm too poor for ellipsoids.

Refer to post #5. If you modify as you describe, it wouldn't work since the wiring terminals are different, and if it did, it would do the same thing as just using the switch and turning on the high beams.

Gotcha. I get it about the connectors. Post #5 seems easy enough. Must have skimmed over it.

Cool, but is the wiring a plug and play? Or a little wiring is involved? Where would you suggest finding this Hella H1 bulb?

Think I found a Hella Bulb on Bavarian auto sport.

                  Part #: 71 156
Hella Quartz Headlight Replacement -5 3/4" round high beam H1 bulb - 55 watt - HELLA

Will have to see if its a plug and play once I get my car back from the shop.

Cool if they are a drop in plug and play this would be awesome! By chance do you know the total lumens these bulbs output compared to the stock? I have never seen a side by side comparison.

I see that the bulb socket includes a Hella H1 55w bulb.

( BTW: What does "AFAIK" mean?)

Afaik - and for all I know

I have been using the hells h4 setup for 6+ years and they are an excellent upgrade especially with my PIAA extream white bulbs. They just pop in with no mods.

                          Ahhh makes sence now (AFAIK)'

Any tips where to buy the Hella lamps? I am either getting elipsodes or H1 or H4 bulbs. Money is always a consideration.

Are these the bulbs you use?

I got my Hellas from a local shop and ordered the bulbs..maybe from ebay. Its been a while as the bulbs last a long time. I think I have the extream white but from the looks on the PIAA website, it looks like they have some newer bulbs.

FWIW (for what its worth), I have smilies on my cabrio and H4s on my coupe. Both have the _/ _/ pattern but the smilies do have a crisper line. For the price of the H4s with updated bulbs, definate plus and a huge difference from the candles you are using currently. Which ever lamp you get, i would recommend some laminX to protect your investment.
