Smoked Euro Lights - How Are They Tinted?

Does anyone know how Hella smoked the lenses in their Euro ellipsoid lights (like the ones Turner Motorsport sells for $550)? I wouldn't think that they would coat them since that would hinder light output. I heard something about the black trim rings being what makes them "look" smoked.

I dig the smoked look, but I will not put any sort of tinted coating on my lights. If I can just get the trim rings powder coated black to get things looking darker, I would be perfectly happy to do that!

    Thanks!

Wow, ask and you shall receive! Thanks a bunch. I feel silly for thinking that someone didn't have this figured out.

Thanks! The picture is composed of 3 exposures (-2EV, 0EV and +2EV) and I took it on a bike trail, about a mile from my office while on a walk with a friend. I dig your sig too...it reminds me of a number of summers and winters I spent in the northeast visiting family. The forests out there are beautiful.
