The US ellipsoids have a beam pattern much more condusive to HIDs (stepped cutoff). The euros have a flare cutoff.

I can vouch that HIDs in Euro ellipsoid housings are not all that great. They seem to be better than halogen, but a lot of light seems to get wasted in the upward cut-off that everyone loves so much. As far as I can tell, the US beam pattern is better for illuminating signage & stuff on US roads...who would have thought?! lol

Wh33lhop...what was G.G. talking about in your sig quote?

He's right. The US high beams have more of a spread out beam where the Euro highs have a pencil beam.

Fact is they're designed for different road and signage conditions. We mostly go for euros due to looks.

Neither should really be used with HID's.

I must be doing something wrong. I've been using HIDs in Euro and US ellips since 2005 or so. :)

well any ellipsoid made for a e30 was never ment to use HID bulbs. HID bulbs produce to much glare, also the reverse shield cant handle HID output. Theres fitment issues and with both projectors their not sealed. You would have better light with some nice halogen's. If you want good lights , upgrade to some true HID projectors , theres plenty of OEm applications.

US ellipsoids work better with HID bulbs due to a clear lens , the euros are fogged up.

                          euro bosch projector :

euro bosch with HID cut off.

Of course they weren't meant for it, the lights are form 1988.

I have two E30s, one with US ellips and one with Euro ellips (both with DDM kits). Neither one has any "fitment issues" with anything and the bulbs are sealed as they should be. I currently (temporarily) have Sylvania Silverstar bulbs in my US ellips and I can PROMISE you that my HID's have MUCH better output than these halogen bulbs.

Now don't get me wrong, I have seen your lights and I know that your projectors are more ideal and give the best output but you can not just say everything else is garbage.
