eBay Smiley and various HID kits.

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Well I installed some eBay smileys and an H1 HID kit I had laying around but this is what I got. The beam is coming out in a round pattern and almost NONE of the light is actually projecting. The lights are not on upside down as they only go in one way.

    Any ideas guys?

Ok, but is the road filled with light in front of you?
This where you heve to look.

It turns out my H1 bulbs were not H1 bulbs but something different.

I'll post pics when I can. it works now but I had to swap out the lights with real H1

I also ordered some 4500K DDM tuning lights with 55w slim ballasts.. hope they are good.

DDM bulbs are shit. The "4500K" ones are actually 5000K ones. In fact, their 4500K, 5000K and 6000K bulbs are all the same thing with different labels. I ran their "4500K" ones for one year and they were dim and blue after 12 months. Drop a little more money on some Morimoto 4500K bulbs from theretrofitsource.com (I have no affiliation). They are actually white, and will last a lot longer before turning to poop. The choice of 55W ballasts might cut their life in half (or worse) but at least they won't look like ricer bulbs. See if you can exchange the 55W ballasts for 35W ones while you are at it. 55W ballasts will only help to blind every other person on the road.

          Oh Hell naw...
          DEPO smileys?
          Why oh why.
You should have bought a nice set of OEM US ellipsoids because depos = feces.
And only H1 fits an H1 socket. Any other bulb won't fit.

I'm going to pick up morimoto h1 xb35 kit and another set of euro smileys..the real ones. I am going to use the eBay ones for testing the install of fx r or s2k r
            .
            Projectors
This should give me enough equipment to play around with.:). Blackout for the record I wanted yours but sold quickly.

I have a set of 35w ballasts too but they are ddm

Sweet my friend is getting me his set for 100 (Bosch smileys) with a bad bracket.

I can provide a replacement bracket. Is it Driver or Passanger?

I need a driver side bracket for The Bosch Smiley.

I threw some H1 hid bubs (very old) with some old 35watt ddm tuning I had laying around and it looks like this now

I think it's bleeding a little bit more because i'm too close to the garage but from a distance it looks alot better. the light is 6000k (not my choice)

My DDM tuning 4500K and 55w slim ballasts should come in . If i'm not happy i'll install morimotos and see how it goes.

I have a feeling that eventually I will just buy best I can get within reason,. I have bad night vision and this will help alot.
I'm going to have several sets of lights hanging about.. will be a good time to mess with different combos and modding.

I'm going to try to build a set around an FX or a Morimotor Mini H1 kit.

If I go with FX I'll end up getting OSRAMS and and use the cooler looking DS2 connectors... I think the higher end lights are DS2 only.. more research is needed

i installed the FX-R kit from retrofitsource on my last e30, but the front end got smashed so i no longer have them. if i could afford it, i would do the same thing for my new e34. unfortunately, unless you have really nice euro lights already, it is a $500+ endeavor.

anyways, i ordered the FX-R kit with 50w ballasts and philips 85122+ DS2 bulbs and installed them into new Depo brand euro lights because they have clear lenses over the projector. holy shit was the light amazing. it spreads as wide as all three lanes of a freeway plus the shoulders and the light is bright all the way out to the cutoffs. it makes any e30 stock lights + hids look silly.

here is my pictoral write-up to give you an idea of what it takes to do this. FYI even with the sealant and the expensive aluminum tape, i got moisture inside the housings. never could figure out how it was getting in so i just accepted it and drilled holes in the bottoms to let it drain out instead of lingering.

just looked at retrofit's website again, i bet those morimoto mini projectors would be easier to installed because they are so small, but would have a little less light than the FX-R

I really like the result you got but i don't think i have the balls to destroy a brand new set of smoked crosshairs like that. :-(

use an old set then. as long as the lens is good right in front of the projector, the condition of the rest is negligible.

FYI, I am working with TRS to develop a projector and bracket setup for E30 ellipsoid headlights. I will have more information next week and I'll start a thread for it.

Thanks for adding to my lame post straight6pwr..

Yeah I may just comission someone here to build one of these for me. I don't mind getting spendy as long as I have something that works really well.

I was going to get the FX-R Stage III Combo that included everything but I chickened out at the last minute and picked up a Morimoto Elite HID setup. i'm goign to see how it looks on my smileys and if it's decent I might keep it. If I get bored or decide I need better I'll probably get the FX-R Stage III..

But if they will actually make an E30 kit I would sign up for that in a day.

those FXR projectors in the ellips look cool. did you just use reflective tape to hold them in place? what size bulbs do they use? my Hella Colorlines have faded out reflectors and its killing my light output on my HIDs, would love to retrofit some FXR projectors in...

EDIT: nvm, i see the brackets and black cheese all over. seems like the bulbs are some D2S. pretty cool.
