I feared this as well when I bought my headlights (the kit came with the headlights). I already had a kit previous to buying them, so i knew i could just switch it out if it caused problems.
But to answer your questions it does it fact run hotter, but it hasent caused any problems as far as using them for low beams. Ive been running the setup for a little over 6 months now and i havent had any problems. I even have 35w ballasts for the high beams. Sure its not necessary, but they came with the headlights too, so what the hell lol.
As far as is it worth the upgrade, nope. The difference in light output isnt significant. Just a small bump. Plus is decreases the working life of your bulbs unless you buy bulbs specific to 55w ballasts.
