HID igniting issues - Morimoto kit

I purchased a Morimoto 35W HID kit last yr which I had installed back then. Upon installation, I kept blowing fuses #13 & 14, so I changed the 7.5A fuse to a 10A fuse. It has been ok since, but always had issues firing where the drivers side in particular would not ignite on the 1st try. It would take a couple tries before turning on....sometimes would need to hit the accelerator to get it to turn on.

My battery volt meter hovers around the mid-13s close to 14.

Lately the firing issue has gotten worse where it would take a dozen times before I can get both headlights to turn on.

Question I have is, is there some relay I need to install in order to get the headlights to fire on the 1st try? I've tried to search about the issue, but can't seem to find a definitive 'fix' for this. I don't think there is an issue with the kit itself. I've tried swapping bulbs from one side to the other, but its not a bulb issue.

faulty ballast? I have the same kit and have also had 55w ballasts with all stock wiring & fuses.

you shouldn't need to switch the fuse out, and actually that is a bad idea. the point of the fuse is it blows instead of melting your wiring when the current draw is too high.

there's no need for the relay kit on an E30, but some people use it. personally, I think the ballasts are causing an issue. maybe they aren't getting a good ground or something.

I experienced a similar issue on my e36 a couple years ago, with a DDM kit. I would always wiggle stuff around and then it would be fine for several weeks. Never sorted it out before selling the car, but my guess would be a faulty ballast as well.

I've had this same issue - driver's side low beam will not turn on for a while in the AM - but if I turn lights off for a bit, they will both turn on. My battery is brand new. Can't recall which HID kit I have, but will check . . .

As hankolerd said, check your grounds and connectors. The factory wiring is more than enough for these kits. If that fails, contact Morimoto. They have a 5 year warranty.

thanks for the info guys! I'll double check the wiring and connections. Again this has been an issue since day one of install, so I'm hoping that its just something simple as a bad ground. Otherwise, I really love this kit.....the light output + color.

I was just really unsure if the issue stemmed from putting HIDs on an old car or if it was a problem with the kit itself.

Out of curiosity, do you have any thread detailing your setup? It is Morimoto H1 Mini? I am planning to swap to the H1 mini this summer, looking for as much info as possible.

Ah, so I guess you have euro lights, which take H1 standard?
I picked up a set of Hella US ellipsoids, which are 9006, and plan to do this Bi-Xenon Mini H1 conversion - http://www.theretrofitsource.com/com...l#.VRxUbX6h_6k

It's time for an upgrade in my car as well, I have had the old DDM kit and it had been working well for the last 6 years but when car came out of storage last week they were intermittent.

*Update*....turns out one of the connectors was loose (the one that plugs into the ballast), and the pins within the connector wasn't making a tight connection. Swapped it out w/ a good connector, and all is well!
