Need some help with the radio

I turned my radio on, and after a few seconds, all of the speakers were making a loud, periodic popping noise. It's independent of the volume on the radio, input source (am/fm/casette), engine on/off, lights on/off, accessory, ignition, etc etc etc... It's a 1990 with the premium audio package (no fader switch, 4 speakers).

The IR slider was also acting erratically, turning bass or whatever other mode to the right all the way, and now does not work. I've checked the fuses and wiring on both, and pulled the top of the radio casing off to check for blown capacitors. I couldn't see anything there, but haven't had a moment to crack open the amp yet.

    Any ideas?
