Did you do anything to make sure it has room to move? Did you run new wire or use the BMW wire? I have done a couple of sets of Refs in E30s, IMO, they actually have one of the "fattest" (warm and bassy, but not bloated) sounds out there...
Agree with Luke on the assessment of the Infinity References. I've installed a few sets now and recently put a set into my wife's e30 daily. It sounds very warm and the highs aren't harsh. That said I do have it on a HU with lots of Xover adjustment (comparatively speaking). Also, I run with one of Luke's 12" v2 boxes so that helps warm things up quite well. But even cutting out the sub the References were doing quite well. Not as much warmth as stock, but much better highs.

Oh that's weird. Never seen that before? That sleeve must come off then.

EDIT - yep. You're right Jean. Sorry the last time I researched car audio it was 1990, I had a e21 and alpine cd changer/cassette deck with 2 12" blasting "baby got back" - surprisingly, not much has really changed.

Quart only has 1 kind of component with 5.25 woofer, so this is the one.

PowerBass has something I wanna look at, but those Quarts do NOT make midbass. I did not get to hear them yet, but the Fs is like 74Hz or some shit.

That price for something as clean as those you guys might wanna consider.
I'm on the same boat to finding front components that'll fit flush enough to put the kick panels back in place. The Polk audio 5.25" components i put in stick out WAY too much.

Seems like the Quart's posted in the link are discontinued.

Stereoinstaller, were you talking about these Powerbass'

I have put the kickpanels back together over the enormous PPI seperates, so don't worry about that...but yeah, those PowerBass are the ones. Should be dirt cheap.

Oh: Andy (Dashboardmonkey) has a decent hookup on the PBs, but I have NFC if he can hook you up or not.
