    Aftermarket Alarm Remotes?

With no experience in electronics, especially with aftermarket alarm systems I need some input about my current sittuation.

I have a pretty nice and reliable aftermarket alarm installed on my car. Comes with keyless entry, automatic window roll up etc... The only issue is that the remote housing is falling apart. The electronics in the remote's electronics are still intact. I contacted the company who made that kit but unfortunately its been disconnected for almost 10 years now. Contact has been difficult with them, but they said I can send in my remote and he can simply transfer the programming frequency to an updated modern remote.

Anyone in the business hear of such a thing? In order for me to do this I require to put my car in storage for a week since I don't have access to the remote.

Removing the alarm system with a new one is out of the question so I'm trying to salvage as much as I can with the current one.

Why is it out of the question? It is fairly easy and WAY cheaper than trying to buy 2 new transmitters.

What brand/model is your current alarm? Hell, I may have some transmitters!

      Thanks for your help

      It is called Macro 7001.

There are various reasons why I want to keep it but I guess I should just lay it out. First and for most its working really nice! so if it isn't broken I rather not mess with it. My only complaint is the aesthetics with the remote unit.

Another reason why I refuse to remove it is because there is no record/documentation of the install despite the lenghthy service records. Theres no telling what kind of routing has been done to it so I prefer not to remove it and risk an unexpected electrical gremlin popping up. Obviously, I can easily take it to a "professional" but with my streak of bad run-ins with e30 "specialists" lately, I have been dissauaded from doing any major preventative fixes simply because of the accountability issue. That is, a lot of my mechanics who've done repair jobs for me (only for a problem to come back worst than before) has been blaming the PO and their mechanics for the failure.

I've heard of Micro but not Macro. Anyway, I was thinking the same thing Luke probably was. Why not update the alarm? A lot has changed over the last 20 years and today you can get 1 or 2 new alarms for the price of a replacement remote for an old alarm. Something to think about if you can't get a replacement remote cheap.

I might look into a new one. I have inquired about it but havent really gotten to known the trade yet and as a result I've been quoted $300+ for removal of old and reinstall of a new one

So is it possible to actually code transmitters to work with any alarm?

No, not even close, but as I have been an installer for 30 years my junkbox has quite a few goodies in it...but no micro alarms. I am amazed that a Micro still works!
