Just out of curiosity, why would you need to rewire the whole car just to install a head unit?

Jordan is a purist.

It's best to do, therefore you have a clean all fresh system that isn't jimmy rigged or outdated. (I pulled out speaker wire that looked like it had been eaten by a mouse.)

Stock wiring is also common ground. Aftermarket decks to not like this.

Jordan may be a purist, but that's about as close to a new E30 from the ground up as you can get (mine will be similar once I finally finish it!)

Being anal is one thing. But there's a reason for it all. Do it right or don't do it at all. That's my opinion.

If you want the best results, rewire. The 20 year old wiring was never designed to handle the power output of new decks today, and it makes for a nice clean setup with updated wiring. It's worth the extra effort.

But stock wiring not able to take the power of new decks, how much more power do you guys think the stock radio puts out? figure most aftermarket radios are about 50 watts peak and about 20-22 watts rms. Thats not that much more then stock radios. If anything stock radio maybe half that but the wiring should hold up. Now if you decide to amplify the speakers, then thats another story, but then you'd be running new wiring anyway because the amp does not sit behind the dash. My point, if you connect everything correctly to the stock wiring and it works, then i'd leave it.

Or, if you're dealing with high end stuff, like Alpine, they specifically request a seperate new wire for power straight from the fusebox.

Now, if your post above refers only to speaker wiring, I suppose I could agree with you, but the wiring in my car is brittle, has wear - which could lead to shorts, and fry a channel in your radio - ask me how I know.

If your head unit states you should, then i agree, run a new power wire. The reason why I mentioned about speaker wiring was cuz people mentioned head unit output. You do however, bring up a good point about changing the speaker wiring if it does look frail and worn. Mine appeared to be fine and I was not having problems speaker wise with my previous head unit so I opted to not change it.
