Need wiring help, trying to reinstall a stock radio

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to put a stock radio back in my 87 325ic, when i got it it had wiring hanging out of the (remains of the) dash. I had a stock radio that still had all of the pigtails and I even had the radio code. So I soldered all of the wires back together correctly the radio came on, took the code, the antenna went up but no sound! After a little bit of head scratching i checked the wiring going to the fader switch on the dash, and I found no plug going into the plug. Now I just had the dash out of this car, that harness is no longer there. Can i get another harness and plug it in? The one side that plugs into the fader switch is easy where does the other side of the harness plug into? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Jeff

Jeff: do both cars have (or not have) premium sound? Are both late/early production?
The wiring changes quite a bit.

I only have the one car, the convertible (the M3 radio is fine) Its a 1/87 production date, and I think its premium sound, it has the tweeters on the door. I think all the verts were premium sound.

NOT SURE WHAT RADIO WAS INSTALLED ORIGINALLY IN YOUR CAR, BUT WHEN I REPLACED MINE THEY TOOK OUT THE AMP ABOVE THE GLOVE BOX i KEPT SOME OF THE WIRES. THIS WAS A 1988 325 IS.

BARRY, FIX YOUR GODDAMN CAPS LOCK, PLEASE
By the way, there is NOTHING above the glove box in the stock system.

OK, so here is how it works: the stock deck is a 2 channel deck. The output wires are blue and yellow. They go into the fader harness, which connects to the radio harness about 6" behind the stock deck. The blue and yellow go into the fader (as well as brown or brown/black) and then come out as blue/red (front positive) and blue/black (rear positive) and the same happens to the yellow wires, too.

Now, all 4 positives go tot he stock amp, located in the front left corner of your trunk, under the top storage area. There are several input wires (4 positive, 2 negative) and then the typical 8 (4 pair) going to the speakers.

There are also the main power wires and the remote turn on (white) going into the amp.

If you want to learn more, go to www.wedophones.com and download a copy of your electrical manual. If you can't find the manual, you likely aren't qualified to rewire your radio: it is there.

And no, not all verts were premium sound.

            GL!

If you are referring to the "slider" radio, most everything came with them after '90.

I truly think BMW had no rhyme or reason in radio choices. Seems anything before the E31 had a stereo purely as an afterthought.

Luke, thanks, that helps alot, I'll look it over this weekend and report back. I really want to use the stock radio I have since no one will steal it. But It might be easier to just wire in an old CD player I have lying around at this point, too many wires have gone missing lol.
