    couple of switch questions

I got my 91' 318is april of this year. the fog lights never worked. I checked the relay and fuses. I pulled the switch and used a jumper wire to see if it was the switch. the switch, when on, illuminates the green "fog light icon" in the cluster. when i jumped the wires, it did the same, but no fogs. looking at the plug the switch plugs into, i have only two wires. the actual fog light switch i have has about six different contacts coming out of it. So, my question is, how many wires does the fog light plug have going into it?

also, i recently pulled my HVAC panel off to replace bulbs and check my fan control switch. when i put everything back together, the rear defrost switch didnt illuminate anymore. I pulled it back off and cleaned the contacts, but still doesnt light up. everything else seems to work fine except for the defrost. Can the switch all of a sudden stop working? it probably has never been taken apart in its life, is that enough to make it quit working? I dont know if taking it apart was the reason it quit working though, i havent used the defrost since april. I guess it could still be working, just not illuminating....

The fog light switch only has two wires going to it.

318is cars did not get fog lights standard. Check that they are plugged into something, and both fuses+relay are present.

I just did some troubleshooting on my fogs ('88 325is) last weekend.

Verify that you have power at the plug into the fog housing. If you don't have power there you'll have to start going backwards up the chain.

I had a bad fuse, on the '88 OEM fogs there is a left and right fuse. Right side worked, left side didn't.

Once I replaced the fuse I found that I had power at the plug, but not inside the housing. The ground was bad. I wired in a new ground from the bulb ground to the plug and it worked just fine.

Oh, can if you've got power at the plugs, and housing, verify that the bulbs are good. Just because you put new bulbs in doesn't mean they will work. Either get them to light with a wire, or get known to work bulbs from another set of fogs. Depending on the bulbs you can't always tell by looking at them.
