E34 IDMax box, NOT FS, just showing off

This is one of the toughest boxes I have done. Getting a 100% seal into the car was an absolute bitch, and this is the 3rd attempt.

Darrenforreal will have this box in his car for Bimmerfest, if you get a chance, go listen to it, should be stunning.

Details on the ports: 2) 4" ports, tuned to 26Hz. (pic of 2nd attempt, did not fit, but the ports are the same.

If I get a bunch of interest for a box of this type, I will figure out how to do them easier, this has just a zillion hours in it. No way can I mass produce these just yet.

Also so y'all have a reference point, this sub system is replacing a 2 cu ft sealed enclosure with 2 image dynamics IDQ 10s in it. They were firing toward the ski pass and were around 12 to 18 inches away from the wall. The rear ski pass was already opened. And the amps were in a ghetto amp rack in my spare tire well.

        But here are some pictures.

        IDMAX in box

Here is the beast of a woofer. IDMAX12 d2

As you can see if really doesn't take up that much space considering it is almost 3 cuft.

        Shot from inside the car

As you can see, it fits PERFECTLY. NO wasted space at all. It fits into every little grove. LUKE, you really outdid yourself. 100 percent sealed into the cabin.

This blade cuts the e34 metal about as good as any. Like a hot knife through butter.

Openings for ports in rear deck. didn't try to make them exact because of the awkward nature of the deck, but I didn't cut away too much metal either.

opening looking down on box back in place.

port tubes in. this rear deck is now covered in dynomat type material on top and bottom now.

parcel shelf back on with openings cut into them. I wasn't too careful doing this because I realized how sun faded this is. So I will get a new one or redo the fabric when I get a chance.

        ready for final box install.

And lastly some rough amp rack photos. this took longer than I care to admit. not doing an intake and exhaust fan on it as of now, because I don't know if it is needed. and they worked fine before where they were. They are class A/B and H amps though so they will heat up a bit. I also didn't want to waste time doing them right now. But I have all the components ready to go.

        box installed

this is what set me back. I figured this was a good time to put them in but it took some time.

the ports are actually pretty hidden by the headrests. I completely broke an already broken seat belt cover/guide. Tried gluing it back together before I threw it at the wall.

all buttoned up and so sexy

        DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

This thing is a beast. And it still needs a good week of breaking in. I also need to completely fine tune the system with a mic that come with mine HU/EQ. But, it sounds pretty damn good as is. I had one rattle from a clip from the parcel shelf but I took care of it. There isn't much to say, this system speaks for itself.

amp rack installed and wired up

All done! I'll go back later and put some carpeting beneath the amps on the rack because you can kinda see the mdf through the small openings in the face plate

Slight whoring myself out to Luke

That trunk carpet... is a perfect match. Very awesome work. So Luke how did you seal it in?

Did you not see the pics, Andrew? The face of the box has about a zillion nooks and crannies, those fit against the trunk wall. There is a layer of foam and a layer of carpet that make a gasket that presses against the metal wall of the trunk, then it is screwed through the wall into the box, so that wall cannot rattle AND it seals the bass into the cabin.

Same technique I pioneered over 20 years ago. I do that on ALL of my boxes.

yeah it is the shit. ANd will only get A LOT better once I fine tune the system and when the woofer breaks in.

The sound is 100 percent in the cabin. People who heard it today have been blown away.

Well Luke I meant like do you just take the box make it roughly the right size and then go at it with a dremel for the nooks and crannies?

Depends on the car. The E34 firewall is so convoluted that the approach for it is much different than say, the E30. This particular box is so deep that the angle of the floor changes the angle of the face, so it is 5X as difficult to make a seal, thus all the "nooks and crannies"

holy hell that is hotness!!! ID ftmfw! just out of curiosity how much hearing do you have left with running an ID MAX directly into the cabin? Does any one have any 10" IDq's? i would love one to pair up to my ID CTX 6.5s in my e30... I have been waiting to install those components for almost 2 years now and they are still new in the box :( BTW your e34 is sick.

My hearing is ok so far. Honestly going to concerts over the years has taken a bigger toll. Also I may have two IDQ10 d2 for sale. I had them in a sealed box before this setup. I may see if I can fit one of them in my e30 luke box, but if not both will be for sale. They are in perfect shape. I only got them last October or so.
