Hooking up an old school woofer...

    Hey everyone

So I am a complete noob when it comes to car audio, and was wondering if anyone could help out with this. I found my dad's old Polk C4 sub in my basement and thought it might be nice to hook up since I currently have no sub. Here's a pic of what I'm dealing with:

The green wire is sub-out on the back of my head unit. The HU is a JVC KD-LH300 with 200w.

    Thanks!

I do have the stock amp, doubt it's worth trying to use it though

How long has that box been sitting? The speakers may have rotted by now, seems that thing was like late 80's. They rocked when new though, there are 4 6X9s in there.

Eh, at least 8 years probably. I just thought I'd try and use it since it was laying around.

well, hook it up to something and test it, listen for crackles and such. Just a normal home stereo will do fine, try and get a little bump out of it.

Believe it or not, speakers rot even if they are just sitting around.

Did you find an amp yet?

There's good reading on Crutchfield. You need an amplifier to amplify the low level signal coming from your head unit.

Thank you to the people who are not being douches. I figured the "sub-out" connection on my head unit would go directly to a sub, and the amp would connect elsewhere. I'll have to test the sub out with my computer stereo or something.

                          makes sense...lol, sorry.

Having a separate sub out is nice because you can control the level from the head unit.

You are killing me, but I see you need help. I would simply test the sub first; as someone said before, do a visual inpsection of the cone and then plug into your home receiver and see what it does. If the sound test 'pass' then your next step is to get an Amp that sort of matches the wattage of your sub. As of how to connect the Amp and make everything work in your car, well just google 'amp install' and you'll get the basics going.
                            Good luck with the install!
