Help me diagnose a stock radio / amp issue ( video )

So I am having this issue with my radio lately, Its 100% stock stereo ( premium sound - w/stock amp, ) There is an aftermarket CD Changer but not using that at all anymore.

When I turn on the radio I get this tap tap wierd noise. I've included a video to help dictate what i'm hearing. Im assuming its either the amp or radio but if anyone has had this issue and resolved it maybe you can help me.

I have no problem replacing the amp or the radio just dont want to replace a part thats not broken.

I had the same problem, and was told the Amp was going, bought a new alpine. Take it to a radio shop and let them tell u what the problem is.

Yeah if its the radio I was gonna replace with a OEM BMW C33 or so which I can grab for cheap. Problem is , if its the AMP the problem will prob still be there. Just wanna listen to my ipod which I cannot do currently. If I have to ill buy an aftermarket deck but trying to eliminate that if I can.

If Yes, swap the deck. If no, swap the amp.

When you initially turn it on it's faint the minute u give any volume that noise comes and does not change with volume...

I will check a few more things and if nothing turns up I'll try and find a used amp.

Unplug the amplifier's energy cord in the wall plug when hooking up or disconnecting RCA cables mounted on other audio components. This removes the chance of a energy surge that may damage the gear.

Will try asap, Only thing connected is an FM Modulator CD Changer which I did not install.


Another small thing I noticed :

When changing settings Like Balance / Fader nothing really changes, I appear to have no sound at all to the left.

Also sometimes the noise is non existant sometimes its not even tollarable at all.

Thanks, May pick up a cheap OEM E36 C33 tape desk or aftermarket deck if I can find one that matches the dash nicely ie: not too flashy. Do I have to bypass the stock amp for an aftermarket deck and rewire everything or just install as normal?

Just need something that works and I can listen to my ipod with, dying without tunes.

Grab a Pioneer DEH6300, do the amp bypass.

Later, add a 4 channel amp and a 10" sub, you will be happy forever with the sound.

Will look into that thanks! In my other car which not related at all they call the little brother of the e30 based on looks 91-94 Sentra SE-R

I have a nice little setup older Alpine 4v head unit , 3pairs of RCA's MB Quart components front and rear, Kicker 5 channel amp & old school Kicker Solo Baric 10

Sound quality is great and just a nice crisp sound.

If you get a "sharktooth" Obcon 10" ($34+$7 shipping, WAY better woofer than your Kicker) and a Jensen 5 channel Power 5500 ($140 shipped) and one of my 10" boxes on that Pioneer DEH6300, it will kick the shit out of your other car...seriously.

Even with the stock Premium Sound speakers!

Def think its the deck now.. Today while driving the noise went completly away and I had sound from all speakers which sounded decent. When the noise was gone I could use the fader and balance fine.

Then later the noise was back and the buttons did nothing.

Either way im looking atleast into that Pioneer and the Amp bypass for now.. Any benefit to bypassing vs not bypassing the amp if your not adding another amp yet?

The stock amp is the same power as the Pioneer (or any other aftermarket deck) so it is cleaner sound not using one amp into another.

Makes perfect sense thanks! Gonna purchase a deck soon and follow your sticky to remove the old stuff and put in the new head unit.
