as the title says, my speakers go out at high volume then when i turn it back down they come back to life....is this a head unit issue, or time for new speakers??
Are you running a stock head unit and speakers, or do you have an amp setup?
If you have an aftermarket HU, the amp IC is almost guaranteed to have thermal overload protection circuitry. Does the sound quality drop noticeably at those volume levels? I would bet that you are driving the amp IC in the HU into clipping, and the minimal heat sinking on those things makes is really easy to get the IC hot enough to shut itself off. All of these "50Wx4" HUs are only capable of delivering ~15W RMS before clipping starts being a huge factor and distortion goes through the roof (you are probably at ~1% THD when running ~15W per channel from the HU). The short answer, if you are using a HU to drive the speakers, is that you need a separate amplifier if you want loud music, or maybe some really efficient speakers.
aftermarket HU. you know your shit lol. its not an issue thats bugging me too much, just curiosity, but i wouldnt doubt that the HU is driving the speakers they did a cheapo installation (i had to go and rewire everything since only two speakers were originally connected) and it literally looked like a 5 year old was trying to wire everything up. but thanks for the input, i will def keep it in mind when i get the funds to take care of my stereo :)
Yeah, I would be terrified of letting a shop anywhere near my wiring, particularly one that offers free/cheap installation. Unless you are paying $40+/hour for labor, you are probably going to get a really REALLY lousy installation!
