Is it ok to use one of these?

I'm preparing for an audio install and have 3 HUs to choose from but for 2 of them I will have to use this due to a lack of pre outs:

Are these things ok or should I go with a HU that has 3 sets of pre outs?

What do you need 6 sets of pre outs for?

      My bad - 3 sets, 6 total.

I would avoid it if possible. I have one in the E39 for a sub and while it gets the job done, it's by no means "clean."

So what's the best way to amplify a HU with only 1 set of pre outs?

Any number of line level pre-amps (audiocontrol/phoenix gold) , what you have above is not the same thing (speaker level to line level).

Make sure to use an electronic "line-out converter" not a passive one. The passive ones have a natural bass roll-off starting around 80 Hz.

I can't tell which type that one is, but I would probably go with a used Audio Control LC6i off ebay if one pops up for a good price.

+1 had one back in high school, once I went to an aftermarket HU it was a night and day difference.

I have a new Kicker KX2 electronic crossover that I'll give you a great deal on ($40 shipped). One pair of RCA inputs to it, and it splits to two pairs and creates a high and low (adjustable frequencies) set. That would be your best bet, and would maintain a clean sound.

PM me if you want it.

I wish that would help me - but I need to turn one set into 3. I have a nakamichi cd 400 that has one set for the sub. I need 2 more to control the F and R speakers. I have a new HU that has 3 sets that I'll probably end up using to avoid all the extra effort. It's a JVC KD-HDR70 that has color control so I should be able to get it to look ok in the e30.

You could use Y adapters to split the "high" signal for the fronts and rears since they'll get the same freq

You could also solder RCA connectors to the speaker outs if you are using high quality equipment downstream. But head units with Front/Rear/Sub outs are cheap nowadays and that would be best.

Why not? I have done it before. But your downstream equipment will need to handle 10-15V of input power.

My CD400 is non op so I'll be using a HU with 3 sets of RCAs. Problem solved.
