Either of the 2 lowest end (Comp and CompVR) Kickers will work. The better one is also available as a DVC and has better power handling, so there is some flexibility as far as impedance goes.
The "VT" stands for "Very Thin", there is plenty of mounting depth available.
I was communicating with Grizz Archer about adapting the new Soundstream "Nano" 8" to this design. Should be about $80ish apiece and will handle an honest 300 watts each, easily. Unfortunately, it looks like it might be a while until those come out.
in the meantime, the RE 8" is on closeout: http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=785
If the Qts were a bit higher, I would have no issue using that woofer. Might be a bit flatter in the upper bass, but should boom pretty solid...for those who just don't want a kicker.
BTW, we have 1 black 'vert box ready to ship right now. That would be the first one we have built that was not pre-sold...so if you are on the fence, jump on this one.
