In my experience it was my amp that was not up to the speakers needs, I had a p800-2 powering a kicker L7 and it just wasnt cutting it, the bass was kicking but not with force like my friends L5, so I switched to a kenwood amp with 900rms and my bass scares the shit out of people. Im not disagreeing with you experienced fellows but in my situation it was what I looked over after chasing every wire, connection and component in my setup.

That makes sense I am using a dinosaur of an amp anyways. Couldn't hurt to upgrade.

I followed all of Luke's advice when piecing together my stereo for my E30. Start by getting one of his boxes... it's crazy how much better it is than anything else I have ever listened to. Serious.

Well, the guy who designed your woofer hates sealed boxes. But, if you like it, that is good enough, right?

Did you build it in such a way that all of the bass is sealed into the cabin? It makes a HUGE difference, and is one of the design parameters I demand from my work, and something no other enclosure does as far as I know.

Bass energy flapping around your trunk isn't gonna do a thing except make rattles and crappy sound, that is why we build them the way we do.

                Makes sense, huh?

That reminds me that I've been trying to eliminate all the rattles in my trunk. No luck so far

Easiest way to eliminate trunk rattles is to get rid of everything that isn't bolted down. Then dampen a couple layers each side of the rear bulk head.

Its just a free floating box for the most part. We made some anchors so I can drive around and not have t move. I like it cause I can take it out to race. My installer has never put one in a sealed box, big suprise. To be honest it rocks. Its very response and sounds awsome. I looked over your boxes I may have to try one out.
