Well, since there is an angle involved, the answer is not so simple.

The diameter of the magnet/motor structure has nearly as much to do with it as the depth. Since the mounting panel is angled, a smaller diameter magnet might clear more easily even at the same depth.

There are some useful pics on our site too: http://germanaudiospecialties.com/e30/e308.html

I see now that the spec tables are all messed up, we will get that sorted out shortly.

I just crudely measured the depth perpendicular to the mounting surface at the top and bottom of the speaker hole (mounting surface to the back wall and base of the box, respectively). The depth at these points was ~4.8 inches, which means if the magnet was as big as the speaker hole you could mount a subwoofer with a mounting depth of ~4.7 inches with a touch of extra space.

The front face is ~22 degrees relative to the back wall assuming the top, bottom and back walls are perpendicular to each other. So if you use some geometry you can see if you can mount a deeper subwoofer with a smaller diameter magnet.

On a somewhat related note, I was looking at the Alpine SWR-843D (all specs on pg 4 of pdf here). It fits the box (4.5 inch mounting depth), but the Qts is 0.55 and Fs is 40 Hz. Are these parameters out of decent ranges for this box?

That is clearly more intended for a sealed box application, but still should be pretty impressive. I personally would opt for something else if avsolute clarity is a goal. The higher Q is going to make things a little "boomy"

Thank you, Luke. Clarity is the goal. The 8" version of the infinity subwoofer suggested for the 10" box looks like it might not fit well (5 3/16" mounting depth). I'll check out the Sundown subwoofer listed above.

I'm using the Alpine Type R - haven't pushed it yet but the box sounds amazing. When I turn it up it punches far above its weight. Can't speak to other subs as I've only used this one. But I'm totally happy with it, it doesn't distort or get muddied at any point. In fact the limiting factor is me, my ears hurt past a certain threshold.

Still looking at subs with amp package. Thinking about jlw1s or alpine type r, but curious if anyone has a great setup for cheaper.

I'd definitely be interested in some photos of that amp rack if you get them.

I ended up going with the Planet Audio 1800.5 amp per Luke's recommendation.

Use two channels to two front speakers. Bridge rear channels to a single 8 inch woofer.
You could mount the amp on the back of the Luke box, then use quick disconnects at the battery. This is what i did for my e36. I built a homemade sub/amp enclosure that fit in the spare tire well. Cables then ran to quick disconnect terminal i made that was part of the battery cover. That way the weight of your sub and amp can be removed for the track.

Not sure how you would build an interface for an ipod to go to your speakers. If that was the case, you might as well get a nice set of computer speaker and built an enclosure for them. All you would need is an inverter/adapter for your cigerate lighter to power the computer speakers (think sony, Bose etc). This would negate the need for an amp etc itf you wanted a direct link to your ipod to speakers.

If you wanted a to use an actual deck, you could easily build one behind the ebrake if you wanted.
