    Flickering MPG/Temp gauges?

Is there a common ground shared only between the MPG gauge and coolant temp gauge? I have a sporadic issue with these two. Sometimes they function and sometimes they don't. If I give the cluster a good whack sometimes they'll pop back into working order. I've tried swapping clusters (because my speedo and odo didn't work on the factory one) and continue to have the same issue so I'm thinking it's wiring in the car.

Where should I start looking? I can't guarantee the factory wiring is intact and solid because when I swapped head units the "splices" (if you can call them that) were horrid. Globs of electrical tape around barely hand twisted wires. However, I didn't notice any torn or chaffed wires when I did put the new cluster in but I wasn't really looking for them. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the cluster grounds above the brake pedal. Brown wires with ring lugs bolted by a 10MM nut. Pull that nut off and clean with wire brush.

Also tighten the 7mm nuts behind your gauge cluster, behind temp and gas gauge.

Lastly, if these do not fix, your SI board batteries could be a culprit.

      I had the same problem.

Removed the gauge cluster and BOTH ground nuts had fallen off completely and were MIA.

Connected the grounds and everything has worked ever since.
