    thoughts on MTX amps

I am thinking of replacing my alpine 5 channel amp with a pair of MTX amps both a 1000 watt and a 75x4 4 channel. http://shop.mtx.com/p/ser_179/_/f_/show1.html

I have a 12" DVC woofer in a lukebox with lanzar seperates in the rear deck and front kicks/sail panels.

I just want more power to help overcome the road noise from solid mounts and exhaust noise etc, etc.

I was going to add the old school PPI 2150 to the 5 channel ans use it as a 4 channel with the PPI as a sub amp, but it would be nice to have them match.

I really liked their amps 12 years ago. Don't know about the new stuff. Not interested in the jenson luke promotes?

I can get the MTX at cost. The Alpine IS a 5 channel amp like the Jensen ad of similar power rating.

MTX has been around for longer than most members here are alive. Don't know how many, if ever, management has changed.

I have always had success with MTX both in my cars and customers. So I say go for it.

A 1000 watts tho? That's some serious power for one 12inch woofer. You should be able to be hear several blocks away with that much power. You might also need electrical system upgrades like a high output alternator. Will you have well over 1000 watts.

Still the Iveys in charge at MTX.Good stuff still.

You might be better off with some well placed noise control products rather than increasing your amplifier power. You need to double your power to get a 3dB increase in SPL. And that is assuming there is no power compression in regards to the speakers. You need to gain 10dB to perceptually double your volume. As you can see adding power is really a losing battle after a while.

Well, right now when i drive the deck is usually at 17 to 20 or louder especially with the windows down. The woffer is an old high power orinon colbalt blue. I cnat remember the power rating though. I could always replace it or go with the 500 watt model instead.

I have a rebuilder who owes me a favor, if need be, i can see what he could do with a stock alt to increase the output.

Not looking to blast everyone away, just have more volume .

Also, what do old PPI 2150 mosfet power series amps go for? I even still have the molex plug! Those are always gone!

I tried ebay to get a base price, but had no luck.

It is the white one with the pastel coloured writing. iirc they were called the "art series "

I still have one of those in my amp pile as well. Lol. Not sure if it still works.

Where the deck is volume wise really has no meaning. If the gains are set correctly you should be able to use the full range of volume control. FOr example if the deck goes to 50, you should be able able to turn the deck to 50 with very little distortion on most music. So many customers don't get this. "But it used to be blasting at 25!" So 26 to 50 are wasted?

Anyways, The sub you have is probably more efficient if it is older, which means it takes less power to get loud, whereas most new subs are less efficient, as a trade off to fit in a smaller box, and handle more power.

In my car I put damping material on the bulkhead between the back seat and trunk, two layers, that cut down on tire noise from the back, and exhaust noise quite a bit, without adding too much weight. I would start there.

Oh and the old PPI art series amps, can go for decent money if you can find an old guy who still believes that the older amps were way better than the new ones.
