E46 = OBDII, so has 2 way communication. OBD1, AFAIK, lacks that ability, only a somewhat readable datastream.Comment

it's not going to work.
you want to do a "stomp test". E30s are basically at the technology level of sending an SOS signal through a series of beeps, only it uses the CEL to signal it's primitave morse code for "my engine is fucked" instead.Comment

Someone I'm sure has better idea about how to read them, it has a port for reading. What do I need?sigpicMy Project!

you're expecting it to give you OBDII levels of information but the stomp test gives you everything it has. It's not going to do what you think it does, it's way more primitive than that. it really is just a series of flashes from the CEL. # of flashes = specific code.
do a search for BMW stomp test. the only caveat is your TPS must function correctly.Comment

Stomp test didn't work, as soon as I turned car on check engine light is flashing and the 5 pedal thrusts and releases doesn't change anything with the check engine light.sigpicMy Project!

What year/model? Stomp test does not work until motronic 1.3, so roughly 3/89 or later.

eh, was that unofficial page of any use? I know you can swap a "173" DME, that is what I did, but I never got the stomp test to work on mine, even after all was verified to be working. My ex's 7/89 325i worked flawlessly, but even swapping DMEs with her car I got no stomp test.
I even metered the pins on the DME, that TPS switch was correct values and all.Comment
