For anyone doing this or looking it up here/google, You need to know that if you're doing this for a 84 and up, Your firewall may or may not have the holes for the bulkhead connector shown here:
If you do not have these premade bolt holes like in my 1985 318i, The best shot you have is drilling into the firewall and locking in a nut for the bolts on the bulkhead, Then you can resume business installing the wiring and the battery into the car.
Also to answer OP's question, 81-83 requires a small battery to fit into that pocket plus some creativity involving the connectors since that is half the size of the 84-92 pocket for the battery. Cheers
