Can you unlock an E30 with another E30 key?

    So here's the story.

    I lost my key.
Yes, fuck me, I am a fucking retard.

I then went to a BMW independent garage.

I went with them back to my car and apparently one of them had an E30 too.He just shoved his key in my car's lock and opened every goddamn lock. :eeek: He only couldn't start it.

He then just ripped the trunk lock out and handed it over to the locksmith to make a new key. Now I am blowing around $80 on being a retard.

What on earth is going on?
Can I even trust to keep anything in my car?

The most security I have on my car is the clutch stiffness and it's crappy paint lol

In my experience, some e30 keys can unlock other cars doors or turn the ignition. I started keeping keys I find from the junkyard in e30s so I can remove steering wheels or open trunks on others if needed.

      Doesn't that make you nervous?

I mean I wouldn't feel safe to leave stuff in there anymore.

Seriously? No one is freaking out that anyone can just unlock and steal stuff?

I thought I hit a major issue. Some guy with a key can just unlock my E30 so I really can't leave much in there!

That just means the lock is worn, you could probably stick a knife in there and unlock it.

You could just as easily break a window and unlock it. You have a ~25 year old car with 25 year old locks, you shouldn't be leaving anything you value in the car

This, and the fact that everyone on the forum now knows one can do this.

i'd rather them be able to unlock the door to steal than have them break out the windows...

i also don't secure my headunit into the dash just so if it does get stolen (never had a theft) they don't destroy the dash pulling the radio...

If someone wants to steal something in your car they are going to find a way. The easier it is for them, the less damage you have done to your car. I never leave anything important in my car. I'd much rather they get in without breaking anything and take my worthless old bmw headunit than break a window or do other damage trying to open the door.

There's like 3 e30's in my town. I own two of them. I dare the other guy to try it.

                      That's funny.

You all need to think like a Cabrio owner. Either your top is down or your stuff is just a knife cut away from disappearing.

I once had to valet my e30.
When I return, the dude says he broke the key in my door lock.
I'm sitting there calmly freaking out -- in total disbelief.
A few minutes later, I see my car round the corner.
                        "APRIL FOOLS," I thought.
                        Valet was genuinely shocked.

The ETA key on my carabiner had started the 91.

I think the phrase "Old locks and old keys apply here". I remember the first car i owned was a '91 honda accord, and a friend of mine owned a '95 honda civic. We were playing soccer together one night and upon leaving he accidentally took my key up. He was able to unlock his car, fortunately not able to start it. Upon finding this out tried we tried it the other way around (using his civic key to unlock my accord) and it worked. At the time i even tested my grandfather's spare key ('97 civic). Unlocked my car again. However with my Accord key, i wasn't able to unlock his car.

                              Holy crap.

Should I get new locks or something if I want to keep anything valuable genuinely safe in there or use my fairly new Camry for that?
