Alarm install questions (Mystery ungo box)

So i just rebuilt my driver's side lock (yay me!) and even though locking my car is much much easier now, its not good enough for me. So besides wasting $400 for a local shop to do something, i figured i'd do it, not just to save money but also to learn more about my car and possibly help the lil bro when he's ready.

Whenever i remove my kick panels under my dash, i find this odd little box that says ''UNGO'' on it. At first i thought nothing of it but after some time of wanting an alarm i noticed it said security on it. I did some googling and found that its an old alarm. Basically what I'm trying to ask is:

    1) Will this box be a problem for installing a new alarm?

    0r

2)Am i in luck by having this box, will it make my install easier by already having wires at a ready?

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated as i have no experience with alarms, just mechanics and audio.

Also would you choose this alarm?

Or this one?(Ill probably go with this one)

UNGO box is old school...low grade IIRC. If you don't have the remotes, don't bother. Yes, you can reuse some of the wiring splices to make installation of a new alarm that much easier but most of it is better off being redone.

Actually the really old Ungo stuff was very good, then it was bought out by Clarion and sucked. In any case as good as the old stuff was, it can't hold a candle to the new systems.

Been installing car alarms since 1989. So here's some advice.
The simpler, the better. If you see 100 features avoid them unless they are user programmable.
Either buy an alarm made in the US ie. Clifford or one made in the EU ie. Cobra.
Both are respectable manufacturers and have retained a high quality on their products through the years. Avoid anything made in china, the latest trend on all products made there is using the worst quality wires I have ever seen. Absolutely no copper in the wires, in fact they even use nylon thread in them. You can't even solder those wires and they tend to heat up, especially their central locking units. If your goal is to keep your car and maintain it properly for a long time, try to get one of the units mentioned above.

Wow loving the inputs. So basically say no to both the alarms i found and just kick in the extra $50 for the viper. Also i shouldn't use the old wiring but i guess it will still make it easy because i can just follow it to see where it connects. Sounds good!

Old wiring you can follow yes to find the splice points. If you do not solder make sure to use a tie wrap on every connection. You will have an ease of mind doing so!

I agree, I myself do alarm installs, and I would also say, be sure to check every wire you connect to as well, just to be sure the previous installer was using the right wires. spend the money and get the better unit. I now refuse to install a cheap unit because they have done everything from not work to catch fire.

On that note, my experience is mostly with older alarms back when my uncle was an installer. Back then it was Alpine/Clifford/HOFCO, then in mid/late 90's DEI alarms like Viper/Python were popular as a cheaper alternative. Is DEI still on top? What alarms out today would be considered "better"? Omega? Scytek? Seems everything is made in China now. I've been seeing a lot of cheaper alternatives to the original DEI stuff.

or is it the remote operated one?

Every alarm is made in China now. Anything by Directed Electronics (they dropped the I a while back) is good (all the snake brands, Viper, Python, Clifford etc). Another one I use a ton of their remote starters but their alarms are very good are Firsttech (Compustar).

I am not a big fan of Scytek, and most other brands.
