Head Unit has Power but No Sound

I inherited this '87 325is with the premium sound system about 3 months ago. It's aftermarket Blaupunkt head unit always had power but never made a sound. A few weeks ago it started working fine during my drive home from work but then never came back on again... until yesterday. Of course, this morning it's gone again.

I know it's not the head unit because I bought a new blaupunkt off of amazon. They have the same wiring harness so I was able to just plug it in and again it powered right up but no sound. The connections all look good and the front and rear speakers have different wires so it wouldn't make sense that it keeps coming back all or nothing.

Also, when it works it's always at startup and it works for the duration of that drive. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

One or more of your speakers is probably blown or shorted to the chassis. Disconnect them all and connect one at a time to narrow down which speaker it is.

Head units have protection against low impedance (short) and will shut down the whole amplifier circuit.

No luck. I tried just connecting the rear speakers and then the front and neither worked. I'm thinking maybe it's the amp in the trunk. I might do a bypass this weekend and see what happens.

All can ignore this. I'm going to do a amp bypass today and see if I can get the rear speakers working sans amp.
